8-month follow-up

Approximately 8-month post-surgical follow-up with Dr. Nelson. Not much to report. He seems to think I am doing fairly well. He is again pleased that I have by-and-large been able to get off the pain medication. He does not seem concerned about my continued use of the gabapentin / naproxen and occasional as-needed tramadol. I told him that I intended to get off of all medication, so I will be working towards that. I've tried to reduce the neurontin dosage a couple times and have been unable to do so. Once I get back from my vacation, then I will do it.
Current medication dosages:
  • gabapentin: 100mg twice/day = 200mg/day
  • naproxen: 250mg twice/day = 500mg/day
Generally, I'm taking my meds at 8am and 8pm

Regarding my pain level, it has been quite good lately, probably a 1 or 2. I've been trying to really take it easy and be more deliberate in my movements, and I think it's making a difference. By being deliberate, I mean instead of bending over to pick something up or throwing myself onto the couch or into bed, I am bending my knees and doing things a bit slower to make sure my back stays in a good position. I think the impetus was that I've been more cautious in anticipation of my trip knowing that I didn't want to be hurting from the outset. But I'm glad to have discovered this. As a rule, I've pretty much thrown my body around for most of my life. So, I guess at age 41 after a major back surgery, it's probably time to subtly change the way I move around.

I'm supposed to start aquatherapy (PT) in January. I'm a bit skeptical. I'll give it a couple of weeks. If it doesn't seem to be helping or increases my pain, then I will bail.
